A writer's share is the songwriters' half of the composition money. Every performance royalty and mechanical royalty divides into a writer's share and a publisher's share, and the writer's share is paid directly to the people who wrote the song: by the PRO for performances and by The MLC for US streaming mechanicals. It's yours as the creator whether or not you have a publisher.

Writer's Share: common questions

Who pays the writer's share?
Your PRO pays the writer's share of performance royalties, and The MLC pays the writer's share of US streaming mechanicals, both directly to the songwriter and separate from any publisher's share.
Do I still get the writer's share if I have a publisher?
Yes. The writer's share is always paid to the songwriter; a publishing deal concerns the publisher's share. The writer's share stays with the writer.
